Dui in California with a valid Nevada DL? yes I learned my lesson! sorry, it’s a long one?
luvlyte3 asked:
HELP?!? I got my first original DL in CA when I was 16(1998), then when I was 19 I moved to Nevada and changed to a NV DL… I moved back to CA but had not changed back to CA DL. I got a DUI in Aug of 2003(21 years old). I got to keep my NV DL. Cops said that they couldn’t take it from me because it was out of state. They did ask for my previous CA DL#… It was expired because I had a current NV DL and you can’t have both at the same time, no biggie. My CA was suspended and I was fined and had to go to the classes, which I STILL have not been able to complete(long story, very sick parent). So, NOW I live in Alabama( no DL cause the NV is considered surrendered, and CA DL is suspended) with plans to move back to NV. I have not been able to get a straight answer from the Ca court system, they are SO rude when I call…. As of Sept of 2006 I was no longer on probation, I got a letter in the mail. All my fines are paid. But, I am curious about the classes that I never finished. Is it possible to have a warrant if probation is done? Can I do the DUI classes on line?
I know if I call the CA DMV they will tell me to call the court(City of Indio). Once I was told to write a letter to the judge and ask to do the classes in my current state, is that a good idea? If so, what do I say/ask???
I have not been in ANY trouble since, I don’t even drink any more, just so you know.
I’m so lost. I just want to get this taken care of and move on.
Thanks for any help.

Only under “very” unusual circumstances will a CA court allow you to do the alcohol classes out of State. There are no acceptable online classes.
To be able to get a NV drivers license, you will need to get the CA suspension lifted. That’s going to mean finishing the classes.
I would suggest you retain a lawyer in Indio who can try to get approval from the court to let you do classes in AL, or in NV.

My gf used to teach those classes in CA, based on what she said then, I’d say no. She had considerable latitude in making sure the “students” did the work and didn’t just show up, because they didn’t get their licenses back until she told the courts they were ready. She also could tell the courts that they were not really serious about the class. You can guess that kept people honest.
Maybe the court will let you take the class elsewhere, can’t hurt to try.
If you need more details, there are plenty of attorneys online who specialize in CA DUI cases. google is your friend, then call them up. As you recall, we have telephone technology here in California. Why not put it to use?
