I’m going into bankruptcy in Portland, OR. My attorney fees will total $1500. How can I pay for this?

I will be filing for bankruptcy by the end of the week. The problem is, I don’t have any money to pay the $1500 total in attorney and filing fees. (I don’t even understand how they expect people filing to have the money … come on). Anyone know any options?

  1. Ask your attorney - I think it comes out of your bankruptcy estate - but ask him

  2. I never understood that crazy loop either

    You are being ripped off.

We had a lawyer and he did a sliding fee scale. We did not pay anywhere close to that. About 600 est.

  4. Stop paying on all your non-secured debt such as credit cards and personal loans, and stop paying any mortgages or car loans if you don’t intend to keep them.

  5. That filing fee does sound high. You don’t say what chapter you are filing. A chapter 7 is less expensive than a chapter 13. But, as the last poster stated, if you stop paying the unsecured creditors, mortgage, if you letting the house go, then it will give you the money to file. Your attorney should have told you that you wouldn’t be fulling retained ( to get a case #),until it is paid in full. Some attorneys will do some type of arrangements with you, or advice you what not to pay, or take from any savings you have. Like I said..it’s hard to say not knowing what you owe or have as an asset. Call your attorney’s office and ask, they’ll be able to advise you the best, and see if they’ll take payments.
